Belvedere parks officials want to return focus to Artist’s View improvements

Parks officials say they want to explore a viewing platform for the Artist’s View open space at the southern tip of Belvedere Island, acknowledging that shelved pre-pandemic plans for a meandering walking lane through the city-owned site, which features sweeping views of Angel Island, the Bay Bridge and San Francisco, are dead in the water.

Charlie Harrington, chair of the city’s Parks, Open Spaces and Lanes Committee, said the platform project should be one of the main focuses for the committee in 2025, in hopes that something can be complete by following year — the 50th anniversary of the land being gifted to the city.

Harrington argued that there is currently no safe way to enjoy the views from Artist’s View, a narrow parcel between 1 Blanding Lane and 475 Belvedere Ave. that runs to the rocky shoreline below, and that the only option is to stand in the road.

“If we are thinking about safety, this would be a great opportunity to increase safety and enjoyment of an important open space,” he said.
