A renovated and expanded skatepark honoring late former Tiburon resident Scotty Lapp opened Feb. 12 in Corte Madera Town Park.

The Scotty Lapp Memorial Skatepark, where construction started in August, added 1,600 square feet to the existing park to create space for both younger and more advanced skaters.

“I’m just so proud of us following through on Scotty’s idea, giving his friends and everyone a safe place to skate,” mom Amy Lapp said by phone last week.

A former Tiburon resident who attended Reed and Bel Aire elementary schools and St. Hilary Catholic School, Scotty died in a skiing accident Feb. 13, 2022, at Alpine Meadows near Lake Tahoe. He was 16. The family had moved from Paradise Cay to Olympic Valley in August 2021, in part to foster Scotty and brother Ryan’s promising ski careers.

“I can’t believe three years ago seems like a really long time ago, but it also seems like yesterday,” Amy Lapp said.

Following Scotty’s death, the family founded the nonprofit Scotty Lapp Foundation, which works to expand youth access to skateboarding, skiing and snowboarding. It also has a memorial park project in North Lake Tahoe and pop-up park in Tahoe City.

The Corte Madera park cost about $600,000, Lapp said, with about 10% left to be raised by the foundation.
