Everyday Encounters: A peninsula pair reflects on a cross-generational friendship

Kevin Scanlon and Carol Weiss share more than just a spot to escape the rain. Their friendship bridges a 23-year age gap, sparked by a chance encounter and a conversation while getting coffee downtown about 10 years ago.
Last week, the pair took refuge at a table outside the post office, both driven outdoors despite the March 12 downpour by packages needing to be mailed.
“He’s like one of my kids,” Weiss, 87, says of their friendship.
For Scanlon, 64, Weiss serves as a trusted confidant with a valuable perspective, even if not always heeded.
“Carol’s always said, ‘Don’t do that’ and then I do it anyway,” Scanlon says, drawing a laugh from Weiss before he notes she “has a lot of wisdom” and that it’s nice to have another voice to sound off.
