Late bloomer runs to silver at World Masters

Since Nancy Simmons took up running some 15 years ago, at age 50, she’s racked up a long list of victories, both locally in competitions like the Dipsea Race and nationally, taking home the top prize at a cross-country event in Saratoga Springs in 2015.

 

Now the 65-year-old Belvedere resident has an international victory to add to that list after she placed second among women her age, and first among Americans, in the 1,500-meter race at the World Masters Athletics Championships, held Aug. 13-25 in Gothenburg, Sweden, with a time of 5 minutes, 38 seconds. She also placed fourth among women her age in the 5,000-meter race.

 

“It felt so awesome,” Simmons said of the recent victory.
