Neighbors unite in rescue mission, using dog-recovery expert — and meatballs

Sue Terrell was playing with her newest foster dog, a Doberman named Lauryn, at Blackie’s Pasture in the evening on Sept. 27 when Lauryn came across another small dog playing fetch with its owner. Terrell says the other dog bit Lauryn’s backside, causing Lauryn to chase the small dog and then run off, across Tiburon Boulevard and into the Belveron neighborhood.

Terrell, a Cecilia Court resident who had just gotten Lauryn some 24 hours earlier, quickly posted about the missing dog on Nextdoor, kicking off a 2½-day search bolstered by the efforts of a dog-recovery specialist with ties to the area, concerned neighbors who mobilized to help and, of course, some tasty treats that eventually helped Terrell locate Lauryn in a Tiburon backyard and bring her home.

Terrell started rescuing Dobermans just over a year ago and has helped about 20 find permanent homes since then, she says, noting this was the first time a dog had escaped from her care. She initially enlisted the help of family and friends to search for Lauryn until about 2 a.m. that first night, but the group was unsuccessful.

The next morning, a friend connected Terrell with K9Reunite, a nonprofit run by South Bay resident Susan Packer, who grew up in Tiburon, attending local schools and graduating from Redwood High School.
