Officials will ask state to evaluate eliminated Stewart school-bus stop

Shahid Khan, along with neighborhood parents Chris and Claire Basham, send their kids off to Reed Elementary School on Sept. 9. Tiburon Knolls and Reed Heights parents are looking to reinstate a bus stop on Stewart Drive between Virginia and Comstock drives after it was removed in June. Parents say the replacement stop on Tiburon Boulevard near Avenida Miraflores is less safe due to the narrow path youth bikers use to get to Del Mar Middle School. (Francisco Martinez / The Ark)

Tiburon will look into reinstating a Stewart Drive school-bus stop that was eliminated earlier this summer, a response to about 15 families who have expressed safety concerns about forcing their kids to travel to a farther away stop to get to school.

The Tiburon Peninsula Traffic Relief Joint Powers Authority board, which oversees the Yellow Bus Challenge program, requested at its Sept. 3 meeting that town staff contact the California Highway Patrol to evaluate the stop, which sat between Comstock and Virginia drives and was eliminated in June because of potential liability concerns raised by contracted bus provider First Student.

It said the stop, which was on the morning route to Reed Elementary School and the afternoon route from Bel Aire Elementary School, didn’t meet state law because it doesn’t give drivers the ability to see 200 feet in front and behind the bus; First Student found the Stewart Drive stop had only 114 feet between intersections.
