Public gets draft of Tiburon's 8-year housing roadmap

The draft of Tiburon’s controversial eight-year housing plan is now public, tackling state inclusion goals and identifying potential locations for as many as 800 new units.

Residents have until Aug. 5 to digest the 350-page document and submit written comments, with town staff and consultants set to update the Town Council at an Aug. 3 public hearing.

Every 20 years the town must update its general plan — a roadmap for growth and development that’s also underway — but the plan’s housing element must be updated in eight-year cycles. The 2023-2031 element will need to be approved by the state’s Housing and Community Development Department by January.

Capturing the most public attention is Tiburon’s regional housing-needs assessment — the number of market- and below-market-rate units the state says an area must accommodate in the next eight-year cycle. In Tiburon that’s 639 units, up from just 72 in the current cycle.
