Reed principal to retire at end of school year
Reed Elementary School Principal Mary Niesyn plans to retire in June, capping a 21-year career at the school that saw her serve as a second-grade teacher and assistant principal before assuming the top job in 2015.
After spending a total of 33 years in public education, Niesyn said she’s ready for something new.
“I’ve had a very fabulous career and a wide range of opportunities and experiences,” she said. “I just decided to go ahead and explore a new chapter of my life and see where it takes me.”
Niesyn will finish out the current school year while the district begins the search for her replacement. Superintendent Kimberly McGrath said the district is aiming to post the job description in February and would like to have a candidate selected for hiring approval by the district board at its April 15 meeting. In the meantime, the district launched a short four-question survey for staff, parents and other members of the community to weigh in on qualities they’d like to see in the school’s next principal.
