Resident’s exhibit of Gandhi stamp collection to highlight peace month
Tiburon resident Revati Natesan has spent nearly 20 years amassing more than 1,000 stamps from around the world that document the life and legacy of Mahatma Gandhi. Together they tell the history of the British occupation of India, his emergence as a national figure there, his efforts for national independence and his legacy of nonviolence.
Next weekend, in honor of the U.N.’s International Day of Peace Sept. 21 and part of a larger monthlong countywide Celebration of Peace hosted by Marin Rotary clubs, Natesan’s collection will be on display in a special exhibit at the Belvedere-Tiburon Library.
The free showcase runs Sept. 20-22, with an opening-night reception from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. that will include a speech by Veena Howard, the director of the M.K. Gandhi Center at California State University at Fresno. The exhibit continues from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 21-22. It’s a collaboration between the library and the Rotary Club of Tiburon-Belvedere, of which Natesan is president, along with the ThinkGlobal Arts Foundation, a nonprofit she founded to promote peace and understanding through the arts.
