Ruth Grant
In loving memory of Ruth Evangeline Shreve Grant, who died of natural causes at her home in Tiburon on December 15, 2024. She was 103 years old.
Â
Ruth was born on November 30, 1921, in Washington, D.C., the daughter of the renown Evangelical minister the Rev. Charles Alexander Shreve Sr. and Leila Johnson. Ruth and her husband, Rollin Grant, moved to Tiburon in April 1946, where they bought the house on the corner of Mar West and Esperanza, which was the family hub for 78 years.
Â
Ruth had a long and exciting career at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco, serving in many positions since being hired in 1958. Ruth was an original congregant of old St. Stephen’s church on Acacia Avenue before the new church was built on Bayview Avenue. St. Stephen’s was Ruth’s spiritual family, where she was a loving mother figure to all.
Â
Ruth celebrated life through her watercolor paintings, capturing the beauty of Marin County. She loved nature and would frequent Yosemite, Lake Tahoe, Stinson Beach and Point Reyes. She especially loved swimming in the ocean in Hawai’i and once in the water, she’d stay in for hours on end.
Â
Ruth leaves behind her four children: Carol Hart, Barbara Retelle, Susan Grant and Charles Grant; and three grandchildren: Anthony Gutierrez, Maria Gutierrez Owl and Andrew Retelle. A memorial will be held on March 12 at 11:00 AM at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Belvedere, with a reception to follow in the hall. She will be deeply missed, but never forgotten.
