A world-championship sailing competition is coming to Bay Area waters Aug. 20-24, organized by Belvedere’s San Francisco Yacht Club.

The Melges 24 World Championship will feature 12 races across five days in what’s known as the Berkeley Circle, waters east of Angel Island and west of Richmond and Berkeley, regatta chair and club member Matthew Sessions said.

The competition, which the club also organized in 2013, features 31 crews from five countries, with Sessions estimating 155 or so total competitors. Most are from the U.S., with two of the crews having host-club members, but teams from Canada, Croatia, Germany and Italy are also taking part.
