School bus agency rejects requested boulevard stop at Stewart Drive after neighborhood stop eliminated

Updated: Aug 1

The board that oversees school-bus operations has rejected a resident’s request to add a stop on Tiburon Boulevard near the Stewart Drive crosswalk.

Shah Khan asked that the stop be added to replace one on Stewart Drive between Virginia and Comstock drives that was removed in June because of potential liability concerns raised by contracted bus provider First Student. It said the stop, which serves about 12 families on the morning route to Reed Elementary School and the afternoon route from Bel Aire Elementary School, broke California safety and vehicle laws, which require a clear view of the stop from 500 feet in both directions of a highway.

Yellow Bus Challenge Program Manager Leilah Gilligan also said First Student found the stop didn’t give drivers the ability to see 200 feet in front and behind the bus, which goes against First Student and state Department of Education policy.
