Stewart Drive finally gets its upgraded crosswalk

(Elliot Karlan photo / For The Ark)

The new light-signal system at the Stewart Drive crosswalk in Tiburon is finally flashing.

Early last week, Caltrans replaced the existing in-road lights across Tiburon Boulevard there with a system of rapid-flashing beacons to better alert drivers to pedestrians. When the signal is activated, the lights facing drivers flash a yellow warning, then flash red, then turn solid red to stop drivers. Pedestrians then get a lighted “walk/don’t walk” countdown indicator across the boulevard.

A driver who runs the red light would be subject to the same penalties and fines as running a signal at an intersection.
