Tiburon adds Nowruz, Diwali festivals to Main Street closures

Writer: Francisco MartinezFrancisco Martinez

Tiburon will shut down lower Main Street to celebrate Nowruz, the Persian new year, in April and Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, in October. The events will mark the year’s sixth and seventh street closures for community festivals — one more than agreed upon under a compromise between the town and local businesses.

In a 4-0 vote March 19, with Alice Fredericks absent, town councilmembers said they were willing to bend the rules to accommodate the increased efforts of the town’s Diversity Inclusion Task Force to host community celebrations.

However, Natale Servino, president of the Tiburon Peninsula Chamber of Commerce and a member of the family that owns Caffe Acri and Servino Trattoria, urged the council to check in with business owners about expanding the six-closure limit and to encourage more events be held at Zelinsky Park, behind the Belvedere-Tiburon Library and Town Hall — the location of last year’s Nowruz celebration.
