Tiburon, Belvedere poised to join ban of throttle e-bikes for kids

Updated: Apr 2

Marin has banned riders under 16 from using throttle-assisted e-bikes in Strawberry and other unincorporated areas of the county through at least 2029, with the Tiburon Town Council set to consider implementing the same rules at its meeting tonight, April 2, and Belvedere aiming to bring a matching ordinance to its City Council in May.

The county’s new rules, tentatively approved by a 4-0 vote of the Board of Supervisors March 25, also require legal riders of throttle-assisted bikes to wear helmets. The Class 2 e-bikes can reach speeds of 20 mph, though easily accessible hacks allow them to travel significantly faster.

The supervisors are expected to conduct a second, required vote on the ordinance on May 20, with the new rules set to take effect July 1.
