Town officials say they’ve been impressed with the Tiburon Peninsula Club’s efforts to mitigate the noise impacts of pickleball over the past year and are now setting the stage to allow expanded play hours.

The Planning Commission on Jan. 22 reviewed the conditional use permit it approved in 2024 to allow pickleball on one of the club’s tennis courts, which at the time formalized an activity that had taken place at the private Mar West Street club unpermitted for some five years. That permit was approved over the objections of many neighbors concerned about the noise, and the commission asked the club to pursue noise-mitigation measures and promised to review the permit after six months and make adjustments if necessary.

Last week, commissioners generally agreed the club had done as asked, with Collin Braun, the club’s director for court sports, telling the board the club had spent about $165,000 to reduce noise.

“Frankly, if I look a year back when we kind of told them to go back to the drawing board, I think they’ve actually done above and beyond, in my expectation, of what they could actually do in order to improve,” Commissioner Daniel Amir said.
