Tiburon local takes command of Air Force Reserves squadron
Growing up in Tiburon, Steven Chandler recalls being mesmerized seeing the Blue Angels fly over his school during San Francisco Fleet Week.
“My dream was always to become a pilot from an early age,” Chandler says, adding that he loved “being on planes, especially the commercial ones, when I would travel from San Francisco to Chicago every summer to see my extended family, like my grandparents, my aunts, uncles, cousins.”
He realized that dream after joining the U.S. Air Force in 2008 and has since earned the rank of lieutenant colonel, serving out of Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield since 2017. Recently, Chandler, 38, was given a new responsibility: He’s now tasked with overseeing the 70th Air Refueling Squadron, the Air Force Reserve Command team that conducts aerial refueling missions out of the base.
He formally received the command at a Nov. 3 ceremony attended by friends and family.
