The Tiburon Police Department has resurrected a long-vacant detective position for a six-month trial period to see if bringing the role back permanently would benefit the force.

Sgt. Rob Law, a 23-year veteran of the department, was the last person to hold the detective position, from 2008 to 2011. He once again assumed the role Jan. 6 and will hold it through June. Chief Michelle Jean said she will then decide whether he’ll remain in that position or return to serving full-time as the department’s fourth sergeant.

Law’s primary duties as detective will be overseeing cases that need dedicated follow up and delegating that work to officers. One example is the recent arrest of a man suspected of stealing roughly $1 million worth of jewelry, handbags and other goods in at least five local home burglaries dating to June 2023.

“I think it’s very important for the community and our residents to understand the cases that we do get are getting followed up on,” Law said.
