Tiburon issued permits for just 16 housing units in 2024, meeting only 2.5% of the state-mandated allocation needed by 2031 and leaving 621 units still required.
The annual housing report, approved by the Town Council March 19, comes amid an ongoing penalty to streamline projects for lower-income homes.
The 16 approved units were evenly distributed, with four each designated for very-low, low, moderate and market-rate income levels. Of these, 12 were built during the year, with 11 being accessory dwelling units. None of the 2024 permits were for extremely low-income units, and none included deed restrictions that require the lower-income units remain so long term.
Under a statewide goal to build 2.5 million new homes by 2030, Tiburon must identify sites and issue permits for 639 units in the current 2023-2031 housing cycle. With two permits for above-moderate-income units issued in 2023, Tiburon’s issued 18 total housing permits so far this cycle.
