Tiburon will give $1 mil to help buy Martha land
Tiburon will contribute $1 million toward the ongoing effort to complete the purchase and preservation of the 110-acre Martha property.
The Town Council at its Nov. 16 meeting voted unanimously to contribute the taxpayer dollars at the request of grassroots group Tiburon Open Space, which for decades has sought to protect the private property on the southern Tiburon Ridge from development and was instrumental in the pending deal to save it. Councilmembers praised the efforts of the group — and told them to return in the future with another request if more funds are needed.
Back in June, landowner the Martha Co. agreed to sell the property for $42.1 million to the nonprofit Trust for Public Land, which in turn will sell it to Marin County for $26.1 million. The $1 million contribution from Tiburon will go toward the trust’s $16 million funding gap to complete the sale; it has until Aug. 30, 2024, to finish raising the money and buy the land.
