Tsunami warning canceled for Tiburon Peninsula, Northern California coast
11:58 a.m. update: NOAA canceled the tsunami warning at 11:55 a.m., about 5 minutes before a potential surge was predicted for Marin County. (Note: The headline of this article has also been updated.)
11:25 a.m. update: AlertMarin has issued its notice: "TSUNAMI WARNING issued for the Marin County’s ocean and bay coastlines. A tsunami is expected at approximately 12:00PM. If you are on a beach or very near the coast EVACUATE IMMEDIATELY, if UNABLE TO GO TO HIGHER GROUND go to a second floor. Stay away from harbors, coastal and low-lying areas until further notice. A tsunami warning is in effect along the coast from Santa Cruz into Oregon after a preliminary 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck at 10:44 a.m. Dec. 5. off the Humboldt County coast.
A 5.8 then shook the town of Cobb, north of Santa Rosa, about three minutes later.
Cellphones in affected areas urged people to move to higher ground: "A series of powerful waves and strong currents may impact coasts near you. You are in danger. Get away from coastal waters."
