A tsunami warning is in effect along the coast from Santa Cruz into Oregon after a preliminary 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck at 10:44 a.m. Dec. 5. off the Humboldt County coast.

A 5.8 then shook the town of Cobb, north of Santa Rosa, about three minutes later.

Cellphones in affected areas urged people to move to higher ground: "A series of powerful waves and strong currents may impact coasts near you. You are in danger. Get away from coastal waters."
