Water rates would surge nearly 60% under proposal for annual increases

Tiburon Peninsula and other county residents would see their water rates jump nearly 60% over the next four years under increases being considered May 16 by the Marin Municipal Water District.

Under the proposal, a typical single-family customer would see their bimonthly bills jump 23% on July 1, from $138.66 to $170.62. That would increase again to $191.10 next year, then to $207.37 in 2025 and $218.80 in 2026.

Those figures include across-the-board increases to the three largest fees — water-usage rates, infrastructure-maintenance fees and service charges for administration, billing, facilities and meter-reading — with a slight drop in the watershed-management rate before that too begins to climb.

At the same time, tier allotments would also shrink dramatically, pushing higher-usage customers into even higher rates.
