Michelin-starred celeb chef Michael Mina taking over Guaymas space in Tiburon
Michelin-starred executive chef Michael Mina is bringing his talents to downtown Tiburon.
A Mina Group restaurant will be taking over the 5 Main St. space along Tiburon’s shoreline that was occupied by Guaymas Mexican restaurant until earlier this month, a company representative said in a brief announcement to The Ark at press deadline Sept. 17.
Jamie Law of the Mina Group said she could only confirm the long-swirling rumors, but at press time she could provide no additional information, including a name for the restaurant, any potential concept, any potential partners or a target opening date. [UPDATE: In a followup, Law later said the target opening date is late summer 2019.]
Rumors that the Mina Group would take over the space began swirling in early May but faded for several months until Guaymas’ owner, Specialty Restaurants Corp., announced Aug. 17 that Guaymas would close for good after dinner service on Sept. 3.
On Aug. 21, Law appeared to be leaving open the possibility something might be happening.
“We are currently reviewing growth opportunities in the Bay Area, and something in the North Bay could certainly be a good fit,” Law said, adding that “nothing has been confirmed to date.”
Mina, a Nicaso resident, earned Michelin stars for two namesake restaurants in San Francisco and Las Vegas. After partnering with Ayesha Curry — wife of Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry — to open International Smoke in San Francisco’s Millennium Tower and in Houston over the past year, Mina’s latest endeavor is the Trailblazer Tavern, a Hawaiian-themed restaurant set to open in November in S.F.’s Salesforce Tower.
Other Bay Area properties include Bourbon Pub and Bourbon Steak in Santa Clara and Diane’s Bloody Mary & Brunch, a popup at The Mina Test Kitchen space in San Francisco’s Cow Hollow district that features Mina’s wife, Diane, behind the bar.
