In Loving Memory: John ‘Jack’ Hetherington, Jr., M.D.

October 9, 1930 – December 31, 2020

We all miss Jack. His kindness, friendship and bear hugs made the world a better place.

Jack loved being a doctor and treating his patients. For more than 60 years, he influenced patient care and research in glaucoma. He was a Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of California at San Francisco and lectured extensively on glaucoma around the world. He maintained his private practice into his 80s.

Jack grew up in New Jersey and moved to California to further pursue medicine, eventually settling in Belvedere in the 1990s. He loved his family, friends and neighbors, often gathering whenever and wherever: in town, the lagoon, at the San Francisco Yacht Club, his boat, or maybe he’d stop to chat after one of his intense cycling adventures. His insatiably curious nature led him on many travels, but, at home, he most loved socializing — especially sharing a glass of wine and finding out more about you.

Predeceased by his parents, John and Marjorie Hetherington, and his wife, Susan, Jack is survived by his daughter, Dee (Bob) Berry and son, John Hetherington, five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, his brother Rolfe (Marleen) Hetherington and a niece and two nephews. His loving companion Ann Welch passed away February 25, 2022.
